About

Dr. Turner’s Sticks, Stones, Herbs and Bones is the brainchild of Dr. Alexis Turner. Dr. Turner received his PhD in the History of Science from Harvard University, where his research examined the roles that instability, emotion, practical experience, community, knowledge, and judgment play in science and politics in America. In his time at Harvard, Alexis served two years as President of the GSAS Student Council working with people across the political spectrum to improve the lives of students at the university and in the local area.

Through both his scholarly work and political advocacy, it became increasingly clear to Alexis that many of our problems stem from problems of oversight, and in particular from ignoring and erasing ways of knowing that come from outside the centers of power, even when they produce valid, powerful knowledge. Today, he is working to understand these “cast-off” approaches to the world, particularly ones that treat nature, spirituality, magic, and science as inseparable.

Dr. Turner’s Sticks, Stones, Herbs and Bones is more than your ordinary metaphysical supply store. Sure, you can get crystals and herbs, spell jars and pendulums. But it is also a place to learn about the history of science, magic, and alchemy; dig into ancient manuscripts; discover curiosities and historical scientific instruments; and to take things like tarot, divination, and other ancestral wisdom seriously. As a working historian, Dr. Turner also provides research services, writing and editing assistance, tutoring, consultations, and classes and workshops. Dr. Turner’s is more than just a metaphysical store. It is a place to reclaim lost and forgotten heritages and to unearth knowledge that has been buried or hidden.
