Triangulating Desire
Some days, the cards are so on the money for where I am in my own life that I’m not quite sure whether to share a reading I’ve pulled for someone else, whether a friend or a wider audience! Are they calling me out, or is the thing they’re describing so universally human that it can most likely apply to everyone? Skeptics might laugh and say that’s evidence that they’re bullshit. The vagueness or ability to easily fit to many people across a range of scenarios must mean it isn’t real. But I don’t know. Couldn’t you also call that wisdom?
Today’s draw:
Three of Wands (Vision)
The Devil
Nine of Swords (Fear)
Deck:
The Field Tarot, by Hannah Elizabeth Fofana
The centerpiece of today’s reading is The Devil. In tarot, this card doesn’t generally mean the Christian devil; it’s not usually like The Devil Devil. It’s generally read as saying that, while yes, there may be negative forces out there, you are the one letting yourself be held back by them. If the devil approaches you, you have the choice to walk away. So why aren’t you? Maybe you’re being your own worst enemy.
Nestled between the Three of Wands and the Nine of Swords, the Devil says that you’re letting your own fears get in the way of achieving your goals. Historically, both the triangle and the suit of wands represent the element of Fire. It is action-oriented, willful, energetic, and it gets things done. The number three, or the triangle, can be thought of as the symbol for a flame or the tip of an arrow pointed towards a target. So why aren’t you going for it? What are you afraid of? Are you letting your fears about what others might think of you stand in the way? Are you scared of failing? Change? Feel the knot in your gut and interrogate it. What’s underneath it that’s keeping you from chasing your dreams? If you clear away the swords you’ve only dreamt are hanging over your head, the path will become clear again.
